A small town standout athlete is called up for military duty while the Big League beckons. Major Stephen Reich was the commander of Operation Red Wings, an attempted rescue mission in Kundar Province of Afghanistan in 2005, depicted in the feature film LONE SURVIVOR. Prior to his career in the military, Stephen was a three-sport athlete in high school before starring for Army’s baseball team at West Point. He was on track to pitch in the Major Leagues when the military came calling. Stephen never expressed regret that his promising baseball career lasted only two games for a Baltimore Orioles farm team when the Army summoned him back to active duty. Baseball was his dream, but it always came second to military service. A SOLDIER’S STORY is about a star athlete and American military hero who passed up a Major League baseball career to return to active duty, then tragically paid the ultimate price.

Loren Mendell – Director

The son of a Vietnam War U.S. Army Captain, Loren Mendell moved around a lot growing up. Experiencing many different cultures as a child inspired Loren to start telling stories through film. After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, he moved to Los Angeles where he worked as an assistant to a talent agent and a feature film director before enrolling at USC’s film school, where his thesis project, Cockfight, was nominated for an International Documentary Association Award.

Since then, Loren’s work has included the Oscar-nominated short Our Time Is Up, the Emmy-winning television series Intervention (A&E) and the Emmy-winning television series Frontline/World (PBS). For the past several years, Loren’s directorial work for FOX Sports, and collaborations with Producer/Vice President Laura Mickelson have been recognized for excellence across media platforms. Their work includes the award-winning features; The Boxer and the Preacher about the little-known relationship between Muhammad Ali and Martin Luther King Jr.; profiles on U.S. Women’s Soccer stars Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe; Warriors Among Us, an ongoing series profiling male and female athletes who have served our country; and most recently the documentary Cuba: Baseball’s Final Frontier. Working with representatives from the Army, West Point and Stephen Reich’s family and friends while making A Soldier’s Story has been a highlight of Loren’s filmmaking career.
