James Monk on “Songwriting with Soldiers”

James Monk is an Air Force combat veteran dedicated to faith, family, and country. His documentary short Songwriting with Soldiers tells about a unique partnership between professional songwriters and combat veterans.

“In 2009, I shot an adaptive bike ride with wounded warriors and it changed the way I looked at my own experiences as a combat veteran. It also changed the way I thought about the stories of my fellow veterans,” James revealed, explaining his interest in making the film.

James stressed the importance of listening to the stories that veterans have to share.

“There are still hundreds of thousands of combat veterans in the country and a great number of them have never really had anyone take the time to listen to them. Every last one of them will spill their guts with a songwriter,” he added.

Along with his wife Julia and daughter Jenna, James travels on mission trips with his church and volunteers at a free clinic in addition to filmmaking.

Hear these veterans’ stories in Songwriting with Soldiers at 4pm on Friday, May 10th at the AMC Shirlington Theater in Arlington, VA during the 2013 GIFF. Learn more about the documentary short here.
