The GI
Film Festival, the only film festival in the country dedicated
to honoring the successes and sacrifices of American GIs,
would like to congratulate all of the people behind the war
drama The Hurt Locker for their nine Academy Award
nominations and six Academy Award wins including Best Picture
and Best Director. The GI Film Festival co-hosted an advanced
screening of The Hurt Locker with the non-profit organization
TAPS and the film’s lead actor Jeremy Renner at Washington,
DC’s Navy Memorial Theater in July 2009.
Overall,
The Hurt Locker and Avatar led Oscar nominees with nine
nominations each. In addition to a nomination for Best
Picture, the Academy also gave nods to Kathryn Bigelow for
Best Direction, to Renner for Actor in a Leading Role, and to
Mark Boal for Writing (original screenplay). The film has
already received numerous awards, including the Critics’
Choice Award for Best Picture and Best Director and has been
described as “a near perfect film” by Time magazine.
