I have been talking to my fellow veterans of 2nd Battalion 24th Marines about the battalion role in the Iraq war. Their stories and voices of who they are have unique narrations. The 2nd battalion 24th Marines toured Iraq twice in 2004 to 2005 in Iraq’s Triangle of Death, and 2007 and 2008, in various location around the outskirt of the infamous Fallujah.
The battalion, nick-named “The Madghost,” watched the the falling of Iraq fell into secratarian violence and civil war, a historical event which will be looked back at years to come
When the battalion met war again, the toll was costly. Their honor, courage and commitment was tested, but they prevailed. I’ve heard the Madghost stories of 2nd battalion 24th Marines about meeting war and how they sum up war. One of my Marines told me, “Sergeant, I have never had a nightmare, never had a bad dream. I really don’t think a civilian who is not condition to do what we do as Marines will ever understand about killing someone — why Marines have to kill people to protect civilians. It would be nice if someone put together our voices and experiences of the battalion into a film.”
I told him it would be a great idea and a lot of work and expense to create a film like “Voices of MadGhost.” Second battalion 24th marines, bloodied again in Iraq, has historical engagments in World War II, the Battle of Saipan, Tinian, Iwo jima, Operation Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Plymouth Rock.
I thought about the film idea “Voices of Madghost” and I thought what a unique title and concept! A definitive film that will put the entire Iraq conflict in a perspective for the American public and the world with a narration of a battalion who was part of the troop surge, and who return again when the country was transformed. Although it is a mammoth task to make such a film because no film can be made without finance, it is a project that I will keep at the back of my mind.
On the other hand, my producer Juan Montelongo and I have started working on “The Triangle of Death 2.o and have initiated kickstarter for P and A fund.
