War Comes to Miami Beach
Overnight the resort town of Miami Beach transformed into an army base. Over 500,000 men, mostly Army Air Force were trained in the city. The government requisitioned the necessary buildings and supplies; former holiday bungalows were converted into barracks, restaurants into mess halls, golf courses into training fields. Through all this, the local residents lives were disrupted by bugle calls and black outs, but they willingly did their part in the war effort. Some volunteered at the USO clubs or brought soldiers home for a hot meal. Others taught cadets or volunteered as air wardens. Historic footage and photographs bring to life the recollections of locals and a veteran who trained on Miami Beach during this exceptional time in an extraordinary city.
